For myself, a great book needs to have a fantastic plot and believable characters. A lot of books nowadays have what I like to call 2-dimensional characters. One such character would be Huge Jim Rennie from Stephen King's Under the Dome. I disliked that guy and liked that I disliked him. If you haven't read the book then you are missing out on out but one thing I would state is that the ending is a little on the 'weird' side. Still not exactly sure if I liked the ending or not.

Unfortunately, the majority of those who followed, specifically in the visual media, just weren't excellent.
